Whether you are suffering from acute pain, a chronic condition, or recovering from an injury, our goal is to provide effective and compassionate care. Below are some of the common conditions we treat at our center:
◈ Headaches can be caused by a number of factors. Many headaches can be traced to neck or cranial bone misalignments. Fortunately, chiropractic has a number of answers for these types of headaches. To start, be careful of naming a headache. The majority of patients who have come to my office with a specific name for their pain ended up NOT having the type of headache that was originally stated. By definition, migraines are one-sided headaches. This is just one of many examples of a label being incorrect.
Many can be related to auto injuries, sinus difficulties, or any other neck-related symptom. While there are other causes of this common malady, these are the types of headaches that chiropractic works best with. The nerves of the neck, when irritated can lead to head pain that travels from the neck to the top of the skull and around the ears. Sometimes the pain can radiate into the face or eyes. The resulting pain can make it difficult to think clearly. Whatever the type of pain you have, a thorough chiropractic evaluation will help lead you in the right direction.
◈ Low Back Pain is probably the most common symptom seen in a chiropractic office. Have you ever had pain doing the simplest of activities? Perhaps you were bending over to pick up a young child or even something as light as a newspaper. How about when you reach across your bed to straighten out the blanket or when you change positions from sitting to standing? Have you ever gotten back pain after driving for a period of time? All of these actions and many, many more very common activities can help aggravate lower back conditions.
It is easy to know how your back got hurt if you lifted heavy boxes, or worked very long hours bending and twisting. These are obvious causes. However, the more common causes are the everyday activities that we perform. Even though they don’t feel painful, they cause micro traumas to our spine. That is, they cause little irritations that, over a long period of time, end up causing significant changes to our spinal structure, and in some cases, major pain.
◈ If there is no reported direct trauma or injury to the mid back, this type of symptom is usually caused by a spinal condition above or below the area in question. For example, if someone receives a blunt force to the mid back region, the cause would be obvious. However, many patients enter the office not knowing what caused their pain. They just know that when they twist their back or move in certain directions, the region between their shoulder blades hurt.
Upon examination it is very common to find a lower back misalignment, or in some cases, a lower neck misalignment that has helped cause the mid back pain. Remember, the spine works as a unit. In the majority of cases, patients will complain about neck or lower back pain specifically. However, mid back pain is a reality for some patients, and that situation can be addressed using chiropractic treatment.
Another cause of mid back pain is rib involvement. Anatomically, the thoracic spine (middle back) attaches to the ribs. If a blunt force affects the ribs, even if the force occurred in the front part of the body, a mid back symptom may be felt because the muscles between the ribs were irritated. These muscles extend from the front part of the ribs to the area that attaches to the spine of the middle back. Sometimes this can occur when the patient has twisted and bent sideways while lifting or pushing something. Sometimes patients will remark that they have difficulty with full breaths.
Treatment consists of gentle adjustments of the ribs and spine. Ice can be used to help reduce the swelling associated with this injury.
◈ Have you ever awoken in the morning and felt neck stiffness or neck pain? Have you ever finished some type of physical activity and just didn’t feel comfortable in your neck? How about backing up your car, and you can’t seem to turn your neck far enough to see behind you? These are all typical symptoms of neck problems that are caused by misalignments of the spinal segments in the upper back and neck. Why does it happen you might ask? The neck or cervical spine, as it is called, is comprised of seven vertebrae. Surrounding these vertebrae are muscles, tendons, and ligaments. If the vertebrae is pushed out of place by poor posture, accidents or falls, or overuse, the muscles and tendons will be forced to stretch too far. This can cause pain and discomfort. Also, this action of the connective tissue can force the spinal segments out of place, putting pressure on the spinal nerves. This whole syndrome can be very uncomfortable, and until the spine and connective tissues are helped back into their normal positions, the pain usually does not go away.
◈ After a few sets of tennis, or an exercise session at the gym, your arm or shoulder suddenly feels stiff. Perhaps a twinge occurs with a specific movement. Maybe you woke up one morning with your head in an odd position. Perhaps the simple task of brushing your hair caused pain.
Does this sound like you? This description is more common than you think. In many cases the cause of these symptoms reside in the neck and upper back regions along with the surrounding muscles. If left untreated, the irritation and inflammation continues to grow, causing the pain to become worse. And, as the pain becomes worse, the arm and shoulder motion becomes less and less.
If a spinal condition is found on examination and xray, gentle chiropractic adjustments may be used to help restore proper alignment for the spine. This alignment takes pressure off the affected nerves, and in many cases, lessens the pain. Physical therapy may also be used to restore proper muscle tone and balance to the surrounding areas. The combination of these two types of treatment has been known to give the patient the best opportunity for improvement while still using a conservative approach to health.
◈ There are many physical and mental conditions such as migraines and backaches, and even those like emotional distress that can be treated with Chiropractic care. There is also a condition caused by a malfunction in the peripheral nerves that can be treated using chiropractic care called Peripheral Neuropathy.
Some of its symptoms include numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and as the condition progresses the damage will spread toward the core of the body. Neuropathy can cause loss of coordination and imbalance, and if dizziness is experienced then medical attention is necessary.
Chiropractic care can not only reduce the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, but in some can dramatically relieve suffering. Instead of using medicine to mask the condition’s pains, the goal of chiropractic is to eliminate the problem by treating its cause, thus at the same time improving one’s overall health.
This is achieved by targeting the systems of the body as a whole, including the central nervous system, and relieving the pains by aligning and regulating those systems into a harmonious balance. When treatment is done this way it not only reduces the agonies of peripheral neuropathy but can relieve other ailments as well.
However, although chiropractic can help rid of peripheral neuropathy, if the condition is present then this is usually a sign that a more serious health disorder exists. In this case, medical attention should be sought, and specific guidelines should be followed to ensure proper diet intake, exercise, and overall mental health and wellness.
